John Peel Night 2014 with Vic Godard & Subway Sect, The Cravats & The Fallen Leaves

Our 5th Peel night celebrating the life of DJ John Peel (30th August 1939 – 25th October 2004). This event marks 10 years since the great man died.

Subway Sect first played at the 100 Club Punk Festival in 1976 and recorded two Peel sessions. Vic Godard (often named ‘the greatest living Englishman by former Fall member and DJ Marc Riley) continued making music throughout the decades. Recent LP, ’30 Odd Years,’ with influences from northern soul to punk, has received great reviews. Current line-up includes Vic Godard, Mark Braby, Kev Younger, Yusuf Blayachi & Ian Holford (The Sexual Objects/Nectarine No.9).

Formed in 1977, The Cravats recorded four Peel sessions, aswell as two more when they morphed into The Very Things. Still fronted by The Shend, original sax player Svor Naan plus Viscount Biscuits, Joe 91 and Rampton Garstang.

West London garage group The Fallen Leaves, featuring former members of Subway Sect, started up the same year Peelie died and we’re sure he would’ve loved them. They’ve made three LPs, gigged around the UK, Europe and USA. Don’t miss them if you’re a Billy Childish or Subway Sect fan.

Compere for this event will be Lee McFadden from Alternative TV.

John Peel Session Night [in aid of Shelter]

John Peel Session Night
Blackfriars, 57-61 Blackfriars St, Edinburgh [map]

Music broadcasting lost the most earnest, righteous and influential champion of all – John Peel – 10 years ago this month.

To celebrate his life, influence and legacy Blackfriars will be hosting an evening to raise money for one of John’s favourite causes – Shelter.

For nearly four decades of broadcasting on BBC Radio One, until his untimely death on a working holiday in Peru on October 25th, John fought tirelessly against playlists and restrictions to engage up and coming artists with his listeners.

His brain child to overcome this initial hurdle in 1967 was the now legendary “John Peel Session”; with only three hours of peak air-time on Radio One permitted to play pre-recorded records, John would recruit artists to record a live session at BBC Maida Vale Studios.

This exposure, inspiration and experience was invaluable to arguably all of the 2000 artists who recorded 4000 sessions for John over the decades.

As part of the John Peel Day celebrations over the weekend, we can’t think of a better way to open proceedings than a no-fuss night with some of the finest Peel Sessions on shuffle and to share a drink and your memories of the great man with like-minded listeners.

Shelter were a charity that John regularly supported throughout his life and we’ll be accepting donations throughout the evening in various guises to their cause – please give generously.

During the evening we’ll be pouring a beer I made/watched Johnny make on the The Hanging Bat Brew Co’s Alpha Project kit.
All profit from “The John Peel Session IPA” (including raffle of VERY limited bottles) will go to the cause.
There will also be some special memorabilia available with the fantastic artwork from GJ Dunbar Illustration.
