So on with the show…

When ANCB (as his Mum likes to call him) first posted this he made available the Phantom Fifty as a large zip file to be downloaded. Inside it contains two files around 150MB each and the length of the shows are around 2 hours. – How the same thing differs here is that these files are available as a stream below, or as a smaller file downloadable version.

So what is the Phantom Fifty ? It was something instead of the regular Festive Fifty, which John Peel first broadcast in 1991.

ANCB explains it better:

This chart came to be named the ‘Phantom Fifty’ by Peel himself, as part of the way through voting he suddenly aborted it, deciding not to tally the votes or broadcast it, instead playing a selection of his own favorite records of 1991 and session repeats.

According to Peel himself he got into a bit bit of a ‘sulk’ when not many people were voting and decided to cancel the 1991 festive fifty. Peel was becoming disillusioned with his listeners’ tastes, complaining that there were too many “white boys with guitars” and not enough diversity. This trend of popular music continued in the early 90s, despite Peel’s championing of emerging of rave and dance acts on his show. Peel didn’t get around to compiling the Fifty until the following year, and didn’t broadcast it until 1993, where he played one song from it once a week…”

This illustration is called Peel Acres and is one of a few of the John Peel inspired images that Ben has created.

As you will see Ben is a big fan and in December 2010 he was a part of Electric Peel – A John Peel tribute exhibition in Glasgow. Ben was paired up with Scottish artist/ designer Michael Corr and together they created the John Peel Tent.

Another image used in the exhibition, the cassette pictured to the right is on the month of October in the Ben Rowe 2012 calendar which there are a limited number available, so I would advise to purchase now.

Now onto this edition of the #keepingitpeel podcasts and as the title suggests they are randomly selected tracks from John Peel’s Festive Fifty from 1980 to 2004.

How some of the tracks were chosen was literally sticking a pin in a piece of paper. I wrote down the years and then numbers 1-50 next to them, closed my eyes and pointed on the sheet. This will probably explain when you listen to the pod that there’s position numbers 4 & 3 featured, but no No. 2 and two at Number 1.

The reason for this is that 50 tracks would take the podcast length to over two hours. We usually restrict ourselves to 1 hour and with this pod we’ve gone over that by 23 mins. Additionally there is the file size. We try to keep it small enough so that it is quickly and easily downloadable.

As you all know John lived at(and sometimes broadcast from) Peel Acres for many years. His house is in a small village in Suffolk, not far from the town of Stowmarket. In that town there is the old Corn Exchange building which was left empty for a number of years but was saved and now has a new lease of life as the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.

The venue was recently awarded a prestigious grant in order to fund renovations and improvements to the building, but there’s still more needed in order to continue – and this is where you come in. The John Peel Centre (JPCCA) has launched a crowdfunder where you can pledge an amount to help them along. But there isn’t much time: they have to raise £25,000 before Christmas.

I know the timing… festive season… belt tightening and all that. They understand this and are appreciative of anything you can pledge.

“Today The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts in Stowmarket is celebrating a £500,000 grant from the BIFFAWARD Flagship Scheme, the only Flagship award made for Cultural Facilities this year. At the same time in order to help raise much needed match funding they are launching one of the biggest UK ‘crowdfunding’ projects as they look to raise £25,000 before Christmas Day.

Crowdfunding projects, which are much better known in the U.S.A, work by people pledging their support for a project and by doing so they earn a reward. In the case of the John Peel Centre pledges start at £10, which would earn you a personalised certificate and your name in the donors register held within the centre. £25 earns you the same, plus a copy of the documentary, Going Home, where John returned to his childhood home in the Wirral and so the rewards go on, right up to £1,000…

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED:

As it says above if you pledge a tenner then you get a certificate and your name recorded as a donor to the center. For 25 quid the same as above plus an exclusive viewing of a video with John Peel making a trip back home to the Wirral. This video has never been seen by the public. If you pledge 50 you’ll get all the above, plus two tickets to an event at the centre. If you do 75 then it’s (above) + 4 tickets, drinks… and it continues…

John Peel’s wife Sheila, who is an honorary patron of the Centre, said ‘it will eventually be an arts centre that offers a lot of things to a lot of people. John had catholic tastes, so it wasn’t just about loud music. He played all sorts of music and that’s what we’ll be doing. It will be fully developed so that we have a state of the art rehearsal and performance, space and hopefully lots and lots of people will use it. We are hoping that people who liked John’s work will help support the Centre and our plan to ensure his legacy lives on’.

Pete Townshend examines the current state of music media and asks the question: Can John Peelism survive the Internet? In an age of free downloads and a disposable attitude to music, can creative people earn a living, and without radio how can the “unpolished” music that John Peel championed find an audience?

“I have limited time. Looking at what John Peel did with his show on radio for many years is worth looking at. But I must assume that most listeners will know what he did. Annie Nightingale once told me that John was one of the few deejays at Radio 1 who would take home everything left in the in-tray cubbyholes at the end of each week. More than that, he listened to it all. Sometimes he played some records that no one else would ever have played, and that would never be played on radio again. But he listened, and he played a selection of records in the course of each week that his listeners knew (partly because the selection was sometimes so insane) proved he was genuinely engaged in his work as an almost unconditional conduit between creative musicians to the radio audience.

So he listened.

And he took chances with what he played.

And he is gone.

Townsend talks about how music is distributed and listened to these days, he also rails against iTunes, calling it a “digital vampire”.

Reviewers of his address were nonplussed:

- The musician and writer Chris T-T hoped that speech would have been more about the music rather than the industry.

– Helienne Lindvall writes on the Guardian music blog saying that Townsend is wrong and that iTunes is no digital vampire.

So the question is then – (in the hope that the BBC doesn’t abandon this as they did with the John Peel Day and podcast) – Who should give the address next year ?

In summary: Today (October 25th) is a day designated for bloggers, tweeters, facebookers… and for you, who tuned in to Radio 1 every night to hear John Peel’s dulcet tones. Also to hear some sometimes strange noises coming out of your radio. On this day – October 25th – we commemorate and celebrate the memory of one the most influential DJ’s who ever was. One of the finest bands around, a tribute to a broadcasting legend and a Tapestry night rolled into one, with Tapestry DJs on ’til late.
For the last decade, on the last Friday of each month, TAPESTRY has championed some of the coolest bands under a church in Euston, from Field Music to The Magic Numbers, Chromehoof to Jeffery Lewis, and from Kitty Daisy and Lewis to The Wave Pictures (of course). The night moved to the Bull & Gate in July of this year. Headliners, THE WAVE PICTURES, are returning to the Bull & Gate, following the rescheduling of their September show at the Kentish Town venue! The band are David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ Helm. In 1998 Franic and David lived in a village called Wymeswold where they started playing music together, now with Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ on drums. Highlights have included playing at the Mofo Festival in Paris at the invitation of friends Herman Dune, and playing shows with Herman Dune and The Jeffrey Lewis Band. David also sang THE WAVE PICTURES song ‘Dust Off Your Heart’ with Herman Dune on a radio session for the great JOHN PEEL.

The Hydrant, 75 London Road, Brighton [map]

To celebrate the life of the late, great DJ John Peel (30th August 1939-25th October 2004) a host of bands appear live upstairs at The Hydrant in Brighton. – Subway Sect first played at the 100 Club Punk Festival in 1976 and recorded two Peel sessions. – Vic Godard continued making music throughout four decades. Recent LP, ‘We Come as Aliens’ with influences from northern soul to punk has received great reviews. Original Sect bass player Paul Myers and Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook join the line-up at this gig. – Originally part of the Brighton punk scene, ska-influenced Piranhas recorded three Peel sessions and gained great success with “Tom Hark”. Reformed in 2010 with originals Bob Grover & John Helmer, they’ve recently packed out venues and supported The Blockheads. – West London garage group The Fallen Leaves, featuring former members of Subway Sect, formed the same year Peelie died and we’re sure he would’ve loved them. They’ve made two LPs, gigged around the UK, Europe and USA. Don’t miss them if you’re a Billy Childish or Subway Sect fan. – Leamington’s finest, The Shapes, did one brilliant Peel session. Their ‘Part of the Furniture’ EP featured many times. For this event Seymour Bybuss (Ben Browton) and Tim Jee perform an acoustic set.

Mon 31st October – BBC 6 Music Showcase in Salford

The Studios, MediaCityUK, Salford, MCR [map]

At the end of October, BBC 6 Music brings an eclectic mix of musicians to the station’s northern base in Salford for an evening of fantastic live performance.
North country boys The Charlatans perform tracks spanning the decades of their illustrious career, with emerging stars Bombay Bicycle Club bringing their unique fusion of indie, folk and beats.
Local legend John Cooper Clarke brings the unique brand of punk poetry he pioneered back in the late 1970s, while newcomer Michael Kiwanuka contributes his own brand of modern vintage soul.

Keeping It Peel – Podcast (Trompe Le Monde XX)

“Twenty years ago on the 23rd of September 1991, 4AD released the Pixies fifth and final (at the time…) studio album. Trompe Le Monde was an immense piece of gobsmackery that lifted every Pixies fan off their feet with joy; it was even better than what they’d been hoping and waiting for. It also garnered the band many new fans and converts, which was a shame, as not long after Black Francis pulled the plug on the project for what would be many, many years. Subsequently the middle-aged members have reunited to become a lean, mean touring machine, but the oft alleged sixth studio album has yet to appear…

Ladies and gentlemen, with extreme pleasure, two decades after the fact, Keeping It Peel is proud to represent, with massive respect and affection, John Peel, Black Francis and the Pixies: Trompe Le Monde’s Twentieth Anniversary.”

Yes in only 9…8 days time (from the date of this posting) Half Man Half Biscuit will be releasing their latest platter: 90 Bisodol (Crimond).

When we learnt the news of this impending release there was a thought about doing another celebratory podcast, but who would choose this time ? Who is the biggest HMHB fan ? Well quite obviously that’s me. But we should give somebody else a look in this time. So please give a warm hand to Danny Last from European Football Weekends (EFW) who…alright I have to admit is just a big a Biscuit fan.

Now this version of the HMHB pod special is different than the one selected by Fredorrarci (of SIATVS), the other Biscuit fanboy. That one was HMHB/Peel Session recordings, these are single and album tracks.

Danny threw down an interesting challenge with his selections, chosen from, as mentioned their show appearances (excluding sessions) but it was a successful one as I managed to track down every song from the show/dates he selected.

A few words from ross about this edition:

This is something I started a while ago, but life stopped me completing it until now. The John Peel Show cover versions podcast. Contrarily the first and last tracks aren’t sourced from the John Peel show. Nor indeed is the closing track a cover version. I trust you’ll forgive me, all things considered. No cover of the many by The Fall but perhaps a braver choice, a cover OF The Fall, known to be a risky proposition at best. Whilst hardly contiguous there are some obvious connections and follow-ons here that, having looked at the track list, I am sure the more astute of you will have already sussed. Three session tracks, though one is from The Perfumed Garden era. The cover by New Order, whilst ubiquitous in music collections these days, is from its first broadcast and so blessed with the wrong name and some amusing hasty recanting…
