John Peel Day Events For 2011

A year after John died the BBC created John Peel Day and it became an annual event, well for two more years… But the Peel Day didn’t stop just because the Beeb (once again) gave up…

Venues all over Europe still wanted to continue because it commemorated one of the most influential DJ’s, but especially because it gave up and coming bands an opportunity to perform. Thus keeping the spirit of Peel alive.

Sadly though the number of these events has dropped. This is why it’s more important than ever for all of us – those who listened – to be #keepingitpeel on October 25th. The events might drop off, but the #keepingitpeel day on October 25th never will.

We’ll post news of all the John Peel Day (or night) gigs as soon as we find them. If you know of any events additional to the ones below tweet us @keepingitpeel or use the contact form.

For the last decade, on the last Friday of each month, TAPESTRY has championed some of the coolest bands under a church in Euston, from Field Music to The Magic Numbers, Chromehoof to Jeffery Lewis, and from Kitty Daisy and Lewis to The Wave Pictures (of course). The night moved to the Bull & Gate in July of this year. Headliners, THE WAVE PICTURES, are returning to the Bull & Gate, following the rescheduling of their September show at the Kentish Town venue! The band are David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ Helm. In 1998 Franic and David lived in a village called Wymeswold where they started playing music together, now with Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ on drums. Highlights have included playing at the Mofo Festival in Paris at the invitation of friends Herman Dune, and playing shows with Herman Dune and The Jeffrey Lewis Band. John Peel Night - Brighton

To celebrate the life of the late, great DJ John Peel (30th August 1939-25th October 2004) a host of bands appear live upstairs at The Hydrant in Brighton. – Subway Sect first played at the 100 Club Punk Festival in 1976 and recorded two Peel sessions. – Vic Godard continued making music throughout four decades. Recent LP, ‘We Come as Aliens’ with influences from northern soul to punk has received great reviews. Fri 28th October – Billy Bragg in concert

Button Factory, Dublin, Ireland. [map]
Billy Bragg in Dublin

“I often turn to no-nonsense, nimble witted, worldly wise Billy Bragg for some advice when I am for professional reasons looking into an event, phenomenon, trend, issue, movement, date, personality etc. As a formidable, inquisitive and globetrotting combination of storyteller, historian, activist, father, enthusiast, pilgrim, entertainer, minstrel, humorist, rambler, sermoniser and scholar, he’s always got a point of view, a word of wisdom, a rigorous insight, a calming thought, an inspiring idea, a brilliant punchline, whatever it is I’m asking him about. Speaking to him, I am always alert to the transcendent fact that he made a cameo appearance in Bob Dylan’s Chronicles, and that this lends a level of the hobo divine to his rugged common sense.” — Paul Morley
