PeelDay
OCCII, Amstelveenseweg 134, 1075 XL Amsterdam, Netherlands [map]

Sunday afternoon October 13 2013 the yearly John Peel Day in Amsterdam, Netherlands will be held at venue OCCII.
To hopefully keep Peel’s legacy alive performing bands are:

PRESSTERROR (14:30-15:10)
Suizidcore (speedcore/splittercore/extratone)
Gentleman from Saarbrücken, Germany with beats so fast and distorted that they turn into streams of droning glitchery bordering on pure noise. Pressterror abuses the listener with his raw, utterly violent strain of electronic music.

L’OEILLERE (15:30- 16:10)
barbaric classical guitar
Frenchman living in Brussels, using an acoustic instrument that draws a variety of sounds that could turn an electric guitar green with envy.

Tufflife Boogie and They Eat Culture Presents: Boogie Peel

Tuff Life Boogie Present - Boogie Peel 2013
The Continental, South Meadow Lane, Preston [map]

Boogie Peel: Endless Boogie, Ten Benson, Mugstar, 12 Mars Bars

ENDLESS BOOGIE
In case you’re wondering, Endless Boogie qualify for Un-Peeled because they are bringing Matt Sweeney with them on third guitar (just in case they weren’t already relentless enough for ya!) and he did at least one Peel sesh with Bonnie Prince Billy and probably a few more that we don’t know about.

TEN BENSON
The band recorded two Peel sessions, in 1998, and 2000. “The Claw” reached #4 in the 1998 Festive 50, with “Evil Heat” also making the chart at #47, so they have impeccable Peel credentials.

MUGSTAR
Recorded one of the last Peel sessions in 2004 and since then have developed their sound and have become one of Britain’s best rock acts, getting more recognition abroad than they do here, although their star is rising all the time.

12 MARS BARS
Mystery outfit featuring one of the few people from Preston to have made the trip Down Down to Maida Vale to record a Peel session. The clue is in the title!

Tickets: £12.00 in advance

Tufflife Boogie Presents: ‘Folk Peel’

Tufflife Boogie Presents - Un-Peeled 2013
The Continental, South Meadow Lane, Preston [map]

‘Folk Peel’ – Nic Jones and Joseph Jones, Trembling Bells with Mike Heron, Emma Pollock

This is a seated gig and a terrific line-up. Tickets will go quickly so advance booking is essential.

NIC JONES and JOSEPH JONES
Nic Jones is a British folk singer and guitarist. Amongst the most acclaimed artists to emerge from the British Folk Revival, his sensibility and approach to the arrangement of traditional folk songs has been a major influence on the folk scene since the early 1970’s.
Much loved by John Peel, Nic recorded 8 Peel sessions between 1972 and 1977 and his ‘Penguin Eggs’ album from 1980 regularly appears in lists of the best records of all time.

EMMA POLLOCK
Emma Pollock was one of the two songwriters of Scottish group The Delgados, massive favourites of John Peel and his listeners, recording a mammoth 15 sessions between 1995 and 2004. The band also featured in the Festive Fifty over a dozen times, securing the number 1 slot in 1998 with ‘Pull The Wires From The Wall’.

Tickets: £15.00 in advance.

Tuesday 22nd October 2013 –

Tufflife Boogie Present: ‘Posh Peel’

Tufflife Boogie Presents - Un-Peeled 2013
The Continental, South Meadow Lane, Preston [map]

‘Posh Peel’ – The Monochrome Set, Would-Be-Goods, Rapid Pig

The Monochrome Set are an English post-punk band formed in 1978, notable for its witty lyrics, the laconic delivery of lead singer Bid, and the idiosyncratically retrogressive playing style of lead guitarist Lester Square. Bid’s arch vocals gave the band a wonderful camp quality, and it was probably his lyrical smarts that alerted a young Morrissey to their presence; they were even one of his favourite groups before he formed The Smiths. Other fans include Franz Ferdinand, Iggy Pop and Graham Coxon.

Tickets: £10.00 in advance

Two bands who played the Twang Club – Yeah Yeah Noh and The Nightingales – are on the bill as well as The Primitives, The Lovely Eggs, the Wolfhounds and a host of others who reflect the sound of the UK 80s underground. This is part of the Keeping It Peel project who commemorate the passing of the great man each year with clubs, gigs, writers all getting involved to celebrate Peel and what he stood for. John Peel and Pat Nevin
The ex-Chelsea, Everton and Scotland international footballer Pat Nevin will be helping us out on the decks after Talulah Gosh’s DJ set.

Tufflife Boogie and They Eat Culture Presents: ‘Dark Peel’

Dark Peel
The Continental, South Meadow Lane, Preston [map]

‘Dark Peel’ – The March Violets, Flesh For Lulu, Inca Babies, John Hyatt (3 Johns)

THE MARCH VIOLETS
3 Peel sessions between 82 and 84 means March Violets are well-qualified to play ‘Un-Peeled’ and we’re delighted to have secured their only North West date on their Autumn ‘Made Glorious’ tour.

FLESH FOR LULU
The original line-up of Nick Marsh (guitar and vocals), Rocco (Guitar), James Mitchell (drums) and Glen Mitchell (bass) took their cues from the decadence of the Velvet Underground, the savagery of The Stooges and the big slinky grooves and melodies of 70s Glitter rock. Flesh for Lulu quickly became a fixture at London’s Batcave Club, where alongside Alien Sex Fiend, Siouxsie Sioux and The Specimen, they became architects of the original Gothic Rock style. In 1982, they released an eponymous debut album and pair of singles, ‘Subterreneans’ and ‘Roman Candle’, which became staple alt-rock dancefloor fillers and recorded a session for John Peel.

INCA BABIES
Inca Babies were formed in Manchester’s infamous Hulme district in 1982 by Bill Marten (bass) and Harry Stafford (guitar, later vocals). Their music was a raunchy Death Ray twang from a punk-trash, Americana perspective. Radio 1 DJ John Peel and his producer John Walters heard the Inca’s first single The Interior and offered them a session. It was to be the first of four they did for Radio 1 between 1984-87.

JOHN HYATT
John was the vocalist and main songwriter of Leeds agit-popsters The Three Johns, who were formed by John Langford of The Mekons back in 1982. One of John Peel’s favourite acts, the Johns were recording during the height of Margaret Thatcher’s Tory rebellion and were openly antagonistic to this new, conservative vision of Britain’s future. And while their elliptical and epigrammatic lyrics might not offer the sloganeering that would easily identify them as “lefties”, there were certainly enough hints dropped along the way to remove any doubt. 6 John Peel sessions cannot be argued with and the Johns played several great shows in Preston, including nights at Clouds, The Paradise Club and last year at The Continental.

Tickets: £13.00 in advance.
