The rebuilding and refurbishment of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts is nearly finished, but they still need your help.
This message from Tom Barker, one of the volunteer directors for the JPCCA:
This project has been over three years in the making and we are weeks from completing works to the building that are truly transforming the space - but we need your help to make it as good as it should be.
The building was in a sorry state when we took it on – windows boarded over, plants growing through the floor, there wasn’t even a front door. Since then we have had a huge amount of support in developing the project. We raised over £17,000 through grants to complete essential work to the building to halt its deterioration and allow us to get into the space and start using it. We also did a lot ourselves and with further funding from Mid Suffolk District Council and through a successful People’s Millions campaign we turned the place around and were able to put on two programmes of events in the early part of this year.
During this year we have also started making the John Peel Archive available through The Space. We will continue developing this over the next six months and during that time we will be exploring ways to make the whole archive available in the future.
But for now, we really need your help to make the building really special. We have raised a lot of money to completely transform the building. We are putting in new rooflights and windows, and making the exterior of the building sound. Then inside will be the real change, the insertion of a mezzanine floor will create spaces for an office / reception desk, toilets, new bars and a kitchen. We will be putting sprung flooring into the performance areas. We’re also installing solar panels and other green technologies.
Then of course we need a sound system, performance lighting, projector. We need kitchen equipment, a stage (!)… we need chairs, computers, tills.
We have some funding, but we also need some extra help to ensure that we can make things the quality that our name deserves. You could sponsor a chair for £50, for example, or if you’re a business then perhaps a window for £2500. Or if you can give £5 or £10 then that will really help too!
We’re really thankful that we have had our external sign kindly provided by Hudson Signs, the glass balcony has been sponsored by The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley and a window sponsored by Civil Engineering Contractors, Threecie Ltd. (which leaves 35 that could be sponsored!).
We are really grateful to everyone else who has contributed money, time, energy, skills and everything else, including ‘in kind’ support from all our consultants and contractors… but we are asking again now because we are in the final push and really want to make this something special for Stowmarket and for John’s legacy.”
